Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – Adult Transition to Specialty Practice (TSP)

The ICU Adult TSP is a six month introduction to ICU for nurses wishing to enter the ICU environment. The program is offered twice a year commencing in February and August. The course is run in conjunction with the Clayton and Dandenong sites.

NOTE:To be eligible to participate in the program, it is a requirement that you must apply for a position of employment within ICU at Clayton or Dandenong. Recent experience in high acuity nursing is strongly recommended.

Course Structure

  • You will be supported through a period of orientation and supernumerary time on commencing work in ICU.
  • Clinical preceptors are allocated to each participant
  • 40 hours of paid study days with expectation of 100% attendance
  • Assessments includes an exam, an oral presentation and clinical competencies

Content covered in the TSP includes:

  • Complex Health Assessment
  • Invasive and Non-Invasive ventilation
  • Haemodynamic Monitoring
  • Advanced Life Support
  • Care of the Neurosurgical patient

Advanced Standing

On completion of the ICU Adult TSP programme you will be eligible to apply for 1 credit point towards the Post Graduate Diploma (Elective Subjects) in Nursing Practice (ICU) at Deakin University.

Intensive Care Unit: Monash Medical Centre

The ICU at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton is a 26 bed combined adult and paediatric unit. Specialised services include cardiothoracic’s, renal, neuroscience’s, obstetrics, surgical and general adult and paediatrics

Intensive Care Unit: Dandenong Hospital

Dandenong Hospital ICU is 14 bed unit designed to accommodate the highly technical and care specific needs of critically ill and high dependency patients. A significant proportion of patients arrive from the emergency department and post op via the operating theatre
