New Monash Children's Hospital officially opened
Today is a very special milestone for Victoria.
Although the first patients won’t move in until 19 April, today we celebrated the official opening of the new Monash Children’s Hospital by the Victorian Premier the Hon. Daniel Andrews MP and the Victorian Minister for Health the Hon. Jill Hennessy MP and special guests.
After a Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Margaret Gardiner, we celebrated and acknowledged the years of planning from our project team, clinicians and families who have seen the new Monash Children’s Hospital project through from start to finish.
Today has been particularly significant for one long term patient, Bonnie Daniello, 15.
Bonnie first became a Monash Children’s Hospital patient when she was diagnosed with lymphoma at the age of four.
After spending nine years cancer free, Bonnie relapsed at the age of 14 and finished her treatment in 2016, making her a two-time cancer survivor!
“In 2015, I was diagnosed with cancer once again. I have been all over Monash Children’s Hospital, from ICU, ED, Radiology, 41 and 42 north – even the dentist!”
“The care I have received throughout Monash Children’s Hospital has been just amazing, I am so excited for the team to continue this care in the incredible new hospital.”
“All of the staff have a special place in my heart,” Bonnie said.
Monash Health Chief Executive Andrew Stripp said many Victorians wouldn’t realise that Monash Health has been providing a children’s service to the community for 121 years.
“This began with the opening of the Victoria Hospital for Women and Children – which was later known as Queen Victoria Hospital – in 1896.
“Our journey led us to Prince Henry’s Hospital, and today where Monash Children’s Hospital cares for more than 100,000 children every year, including 66,000 children across our three emergency departments,” Mr Stripp said.
“The new building now fulfils a long-held dream of ours – to create a dedicated home which meets the unique needs of our children and adolescents in hospital, and their families,” he said.
Over the next few weeks our staff will be busy moving across to the new hospital, getting ready to care for patients in the new Monash Children’s Hospital.
