In a partnership between Monash Health and Peter Mac, Victorian women with early, low-risk breast cancer are among the first in the world to have access to intra-operative radiation therapy at Moorabbin Hospital.

As part of an international trial, a single nine-minute dose of radiation therapy delivered during breast cancer surgery is replacing three to five weeks of daily treatment.

Monash Health’s Director of Breast Services, Dr Jane Fox said the trial aimed to remove the physical and emotional strain of multiple radiation doses.

“This is going to have an important impact on women who for a variety of reasons, due to distance or economics, travelling and having multiple treatments is impossible for them,” she said.
